We're doing something new in 2024! Our website is getting a big overhaul and we're starting a blog! Scrolling through two decades of Facebook posts reminds us how much we've accomplished in Lucas's memory over the years, and sometimes those memories are difficult to find online. Moving forward we'll able to share stories and impact here in a way that is easily searchable and accessible. We hope you'll follow along.
To start, we'll be adding a few "anchor" posts that allow us to share some favorite memories from over the years and we'll be sharing new events and stories in real-time moving forward.
Today, we're sharing a special moment from the dedication of our new sign at the LJWMYF property at 38 Waterville Mountain Road. Like so many things over the years, this sign was an unexpected surprise brought to life completely through the generosity of volunteers and donors. We are continually in awe! It was unveiled in a ceremony on December 22, 2023 - the 25th Anniversary of Lucas's death in Kuwait.
Rosalie Williams:
Some people have asked me why I get so excited sometimes about my son's death, they say, "You seem almost glad he is gone." Of course I'm not glad, but I have been committed to a purpose. Today in three different businesses I had at least seven people come up to me to tell me that I have been doing amazing things in my son's name. I am always surprised how people even remember his name. But that was my goal–to still hear his name. They tell me how they participated when they were kids, or how much their children enjoy being a part of a program, or just say, "Thank You for everything you do!" In those moments, I take an unnoticeable breath and let the coolness circulate through my body, just like it did when SSG Stokes brought Lucas back to me and I had to verify it was him in that coffin, there was no way it was him, but when I touched his ear, I knew it was him. Feeling that energy has stayed with me all these years, and has given me a purpose. I never thought anyone would ever benefit from his death. I sure was wrong. Thousands and thousands of children have benefited from the Memorial's activities and programs. It is now impacting the 3rd generation of children. Lucas's wishes and dreams have come true through this work. On the 25th anniversary of his death, I know Lucas is still here with us enjoying what it is all about!
During the ceremony, Andy Beaulieu presented Rosalie with his Marine pin. Andy was in attendance as part of the honor guard from the American Legion Post # 42 in Enosburg Falls where he is an active member and past commander. He served in the United States Marine Corps and the Vermont National Guard. This touching gesture brought tears and gratitude and reminds us that we share so many connections with those around us.
